Pakistan’s Anser Abbas has booked his place in the men’s long jump final at the Asian Games in Nagoya. Abbas produced a 7.28-meter jump during Sunday’s qualification round at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
His performance secured one of the 12 available spots in the final. The distance was officially recorded as his personal best on the international circuit.
However, Abbas has previously produced longer jumps in domestic competitions.
Abbas Secures Final Spot in Nagoya
The Pakistani athlete delivered the required performance during the qualification round. Consequently, he advanced to the final alongside the leading competitors.
Although his 7.28-meter effort was listed as a personal best, Abbas has jumped farther at domestic events.
He recorded 7.69 meters at the Karachi National Games. He also registered a 7.55-meter jump at the National Championship.
Those performances, however, were not included in the international record. Therefore, his 7.28-meter effort remains his recognised personal best at the international level.
Anvarov Leads Long Jump Qualification
Uzbekistan’s Anvar Anvarov finished at the top of the qualification standings. He produced an impressive 8.00-meter jump to lead the field.
India’s Murali Sreeshankar followed in second place with a 7.84-meter effort. Japan’s Yuki Hashioka secured third position after recording 7.74 meters.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Wong Pak Hang also jumped 7.28 meters. However, he finished 13th and narrowly missed qualification for the final.
The results put Abbas among the 12 athletes who advanced to the next stage of the competition.
Abbas Set for Long Jump Final
The men’s long jump final is scheduled for Monday. Abbas will now return to competition with a chance to challenge for a podium position.
His qualification gives Pakistan another opportunity to make an impact in athletics at the Asian Games.
With the qualification round complete, attention now turns to Abbas’s final attempt at a medal in Nagoya.
