US President Donald Trump says Iran has contacted Washington directly to discuss a possible agreement as the conflict enters its seventh month. Trump also indicated that he believes the war could be approaching its final stage.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in North Carolina, Trump was asked about the current stage of the conflict. He responded, “Hopefully we are towards the end of the war.”
“They want to make a deal, and we’ll see how that works out,” Trump said. He later confirmed that the communication came directly from Iranian officials rather than through intermediaries.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Key Issue
Trump’s comments come as tensions remain high over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments. Around one-fifth of global oil and LNG trade passed through the waterway before the conflict disrupted shipping.
The United States and Iran reached an interim memorandum in June that extended a ceasefire and created a framework for further negotiations. The agreement also called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and future talks on issues including Iran’s nuclear programme.
However, the arrangement has since faced serious difficulties. Recent negotiations involving Iran and Gulf states have focused on restoring safe passage through the strait, while disagreements over its future management remain unresolved.
Conflict Continues Across the Region
The war began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US military positions across the region.
The conflict has since expanded beyond the original confrontation. Fighting involving Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen has added pressure on regional shipping routes and increased concerns over energy supplies.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue despite the renewed tensions. Trump’s latest comments suggest Washington believes Tehran may now be prepared to return to negotiations, although no new agreement has been announced.
For now, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains a central issue in efforts to reduce regional tensions and restore normal shipping.
