ISLAMABAD: The superintendent of Adiala Jail has denied allegations that former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, are being held in solitary confinement.
Jail authorities submitted separate reports to the Islamabad High Court in response to petitions challenging the alleged confinement. The case is scheduled for hearing before Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro.
According to the superintendent, no inmate at Adiala Jail is being kept in solitary confinement. Therefore, the report stated that both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are serving their sentences in accordance with the law.
The report also rejected allegations of discriminatory treatment. However, it explained that additional security arrangements exist because of Imran Khan’s status as a former prime minister and political party leader.
According to the report, Imran Khan is housed in a seven-cell compound where he can move freely throughout the day. He remains inside his cell only during designated night-time lock-up hours.
Jail officials regularly meet him to address his needs, while doctors examine him three times daily. Medical staff monitor his blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and other vital signs.
The report further stated that a convicted inmate prepares meals according to his preferred menu. Moreover, he has access to newspapers, books, exercise facilities, natural sunlight, and fresh air.
Regarding Bushra Bibi, the superintendent said she lives in a secure enclosure with a spacious room, private courtyard, and separate kitchen. She may move freely within the area during daytime hours.
Female warders remain on duty around the clock, while medical staff examine her at least twice daily. Furthermore, she has access to fresh air, natural light, and weekly meetings with Imran Khan under prison rules.
The report concluded that both prisoners are being treated according to prison regulations and that neither is being held in solitary confinement.
