Kakar Served as Army Chief From 1993 to 1996
General Abdul Waheed Kakar served as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff from January 1993 to January 1996. He assumed the position following the death of his predecessor, General Asif Nawaz Janjua.
His tenure coincided with a significant political crisis in Pakistan. In 1993, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif both left office following negotiations that helped resolve the standoff.
Kakar completed his three-year term before retiring from military service in 1996. He remained a notable figure in Pakistan’s military history because of his role during that politically turbulent period.
His death has prompted tributes from the country’s political and military leadership, recognising his years of service to Pakistan.
