Islamabad is moving closer to getting a new technology park under a public-private partnership model. The Public Private Partnership Authority (P3A) Board has approved funding support for preparing Islamabad Technopolis.
The decision was taken during the authorityโs 44th board meeting in Islamabad on Monday. The meeting was chaired by Prime Ministerโs Adviser on Privatisation Muhammad Ali.
The approved funding will support preparations for developing the proposed technology park.
Funding Approved for Islamabad Technopolis
The P3A Board has approved funding to prepare Islamabad Technopolis for development. The project will follow a public-private partnership, or PPP, model.
The funding will cover project preparation and the appointment of a transaction adviser. The adviser will help develop a viable structure for the proposed PPP project.
This step will allow authorities to work on the projectโs commercial and partnership framework. Meanwhile, the project remains under the leadership of the Special Technology Zones Authority (STZA).
Technology Park Aims to Boost Innovation
Islamabad Technopolis is planned as an integrated technology park. The project aims to promote technology exports and innovation. It also seeks to create skilled employment opportunities.
Technology transfer is another key objective of the proposed technology hub. The project will also seek investment from the private sector.
Through private-sector participation, the authorities aim to develop the proposed technology hub under the PPP framework.
The project preparation stage will therefore focus on establishing a structure that can attract private investment.
P3A Reviews Railway Property Development Plan
The P3A Board also reviewed another proposal during the meeting. The proposal involves the commercial development of selected Pakistan Railways properties.
The Railway Estate Development and Marketing Company (REDAMCO) would lead the initiative. A pilot project is planned for railway properties in Karachi.
Additional railway sites could be considered during later phases. However, their inclusion will depend on the performance of the Karachi pilot project.
Railway Land to Be Put to Commercial Use
The initiative aims to bring valuable railway land into commercial use. Private-sector participation will play an important role in the proposed development.
The plan also seeks to create sustainable, long-term revenue streams for Pakistan Railways. The Karachi pilot will therefore provide an initial basis for assessing the approach.
If the pilot performs as planned, additional properties could enter the programme in later phases.
Islamabad Technology Park and Railway Plan Move Together
The two initiatives reflect separate areas of public-private partnership development. Islamabad Technopolis focuses on technology, innovation, exports and skilled employment.
Meanwhile, the railway property initiative focuses on commercialising selected railway assets. For Islamabad Technopolis, the immediate priority remains project preparation.
The appointment of a transaction adviser will help authorities develop the PPP structure. At the same time, the proposed technology park will seek private investment for its development.
The P3A Boardโs approval has therefore moved the Islamabad Technopolis project into its next preparation stage. However, the supplied details do not provide a timeline for the technology parkโs completion.
For now, authorities will focus on preparing the project and establishing a viable public-private partnership structure.
