The government has proposed a 100-acre Mariculture Investment and Development Estate (MIDE) at the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KoFHA).
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry outlined the plan during a briefing on the proposed development.
The project aims to bring mariculture, aquaculture, research, processing and commercial activities under one integrated framework.
Four Zones Planned for Mariculture Estate
According to the concept master plan, the estate will feature four main zones.
These include a 30-acre mariculture zone, a 20-acre hatchery zone, a 20-acre aqua research park and a 20-acre commercial district.
The hatchery zone will support advanced aquatic seed production. Meanwhile, the research park will focus on research, innovation and training.
The estate will also include processing facilities, cold-chain infrastructure and value-added services.
Project to Support Pakistan’s Blue Economy
Chaudhry said a modern mariculture ecosystem could help Pakistan increase higher-value fisheries production.
He added that the project could strengthen aquatic seed production while supporting value addition and export-oriented activities.
The development will also include commercial and hospitality facilities, sustainable infrastructure and green spaces.
Planners have proposed an internal road network, power facilities and renewable-energy systems for the estate.
The project will also require water supply and treatment systems, wastewater treatment and information and communication technology infrastructure.
Smart Infrastructure and Green Development
The proposed estate will feature smart-estate management, security and surveillance systems.
Green belts and landscaping will also form part of the development plan.
Chaudhry said the initiative aims to attract investment, increase exports and create employment while promoting technology and innovation.
“Investing in modern marine infrastructure and technology is essential for building a sustainable blue economy and creating new economic opportunities for coastal communities,” he said.
The concept plan identifies the National Deep Sea Fishing Harbour and KoFHA as the institutional setting for the proposed development.
The project is expected to support Pakistan’s broader efforts to expand its blue economy and develop modern marine industries.
