MUZAFFARABAD: A major fire swept through the historic Kappa Gali Bazaar in Leepa Valley, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), destroying dozens of businesses.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said at least 47 shops were completely destroyed along with their goods. The market is located around 107 kilometres from Muzaffarabad, the capital of AJK.
Fire Destroys Shops and Mosque
The blaze also destroyed a mosque and a hotel, causing significant property damage across the densely built-up market.
According to the SDMA, most shops in the old Kappa Gali Bazaar were made of wood.
The wooden structures allowed the flames to spread rapidly through the market. They also made firefighting efforts more difficult.
The fire caused extensive losses as shopkeepers lost both their businesses and stored goods.
Rescue Teams Save Nearby Shops
Local residents joined rescue efforts as the fire spread through the bazaar.
Rescue 1122 personnel also participated in firefighting and relief operations.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, rescue teams and residents managed to save 15 other shops.
They also prevented another nearby mosque from being destroyed by the flames.
Authorities are continuing to assess the overall damage caused by the fire.
AJK Government Pledges Relief
The SDMA has released preliminary details about the losses as officials continue their assessment.
The destruction has left dozens of shopkeepers facing significant financial losses.
The AJK government has pledged to provide relief to the affected shopkeepers on a priority basis.
