DSP and Gunman Martyred in Lakki Marwat Attack

Lakki Marwat Attack

LAKKI MARWAT: A tragic militant attack in Lakki Marwat claimed the lives of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gul Mohammad Khan and Constable Naseem Gul, as per a statement released by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police on Saturday.

The incident occurred near Manjiwala Chowk when the police vehicle came under fire. One more policeman sustained injuries and was promptly transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Following the attack, a significant police presence rushed to the scene and initiated a search operation.

In a separate incident on Friday, another police constable lost his life when unidentified armed individuals targeted the post-polio campaign assessment team in the Manra area of Birmil tehsil, Lower South Waziristan district.

Despite the attack, the polio monitoring staff managed to escape unharmed. These incidents underscore the precarious security situation prevailing in the provinces bordering Afghanistan.

According to a quarterly report released by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) based in Islamabad, the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan has deteriorated significantly.

The report highlights that during the first quarter of 2024, these two provinces experienced 92% of all fatalities and 86% of all attacks, including terrorist activities and security operations.

The data reveals a total of 432 violence-related fatalities and 370 injuries resulting from 245 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terrorism operations.

Of the 432 fatalities, 281 were civilians and security personnel. KP and Balochistan alone accounted for 51% and 41% of these fatalities, respectively, emphasizing the severity of the situation in these regions.

Furthermore, 64 incidents of sabotage were recorded across the country, targeting government properties, politicians, private assets, and security installations.

The report also indicates a surge in violence compared to the previous quarter, with fatalities rising from 91 to 178.

Additionally, Sindh province witnessed a nearly 47% increase in violence, albeit with a low number of fatalities.

These sobering statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures and proactive measures to address the escalating violence and instability in these regions.
