NA Secretariat
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) Secretariat clarified on Tuesday that independent members of the National Assembly (MNAs) backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) cannot be considered part of the Sunni Alliance Council (SIC) at present.
This announcement comes as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has not conveyed any notification regarding the affiliation of independent MNAs with the SIC.
In a statement, the NA Secretariat asserted that PTI-backed lawmakers would be treated as independents until formal notification of their party affiliation is received from the ECP.
The PTI’s decision to ally with the SIC, following the February 8 general elections where its candidates ran independently, was announced on February 18.
However, the move faced criticism from certain PTI members, particularly regarding the decision to form a coalition with the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) in Centre and Punjab.
Chairman of PTI, Barrister Gohar Ali, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its alliance with the SIC on March 18.
He acknowledged differences of opinion within the party but emphasized that the majority supported the decision.
Barrister Ali defended the alliance as the right one, highlighting the PTI’s consultative approach in decision-making, unlike other political parties.
He explained that the PTI’s core committee conducts numerous meetings to deliberate and finalize decisions collectively.
Responding to criticism from party member Sher Afzal Marwat, who labeled the alliance with the SIC as a mistake, Barrister Ali reiterated that it was Marwat’s personal opinion and emphasized the party’s democratic process of decision-making.
The ongoing discussion underscores the complexities of political alliances and decision-making processes within the PTI, highlighting the importance of transparency and consensus-building in political strategies.
