Ghulam Nabi Memon Reinstated as Sindh IG for Second Term

Ghulam Nabi Memon

Ghulam Nabi Memon, a distinguished grade 21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, has been appointed as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Sindh for the second time, following the approval of the federal government.

This decision comes after his notable tenure as the Executive Director of the State Life Insurance Corporation (SLIC).

According to a notification issued by the Establishment Division, Memon’s appointment as the Provincial Police Officer (PPO) of Sindh, under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973, is effective immediately and until further orders.

In light of this appointment, the current Sindh police chief, Riffat Mukhtar, has been transferred and directed to report to the Establishment Division, as per the official notification.

Memon’s return to the helm of the Sindh police comes after a brief replacement ahead of the February 8 general elections last year.

During his previous tenure, Memon implemented effective policies that brought about significant changes within the police department.

One of his notable initiatives was the modernization and reorganization of the police department, including the establishment of specialized units to tackle various societal challenges.

Among these was a dedicated unit to combat violence against women, particularly addressing the issue of Karo-Kari.

Additionally, Memon initiated a vigilant campaign against narcotics, utilizing resources from the Special Branch Sindh to conduct raids and crackdowns on drug trafficking networks.

Under Memon’s leadership, several police officers with alleged ties to criminal groups were arrested, dismissed, or suspended, signaling a robust stance against corruption within the force.

He also personally supervised operations, such as the crackdown on dacoits in the Katcha area of Sindh, demonstrating his hands-on approach to law enforcement.

Overall, Memon’s reappointment signifies a continuation of his proactive and impactful approach to policing, aiming to ensure safety and security within the province of Sindh.
