Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Barrister Gohar has strongly condemned the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as the Chief Minister of Punjab, characterizing it as a ‘selection’ rather than a democratic process.
Gohar expressed vehement disapproval, asserting that Maryam Nawaz’s elevation to the provincial government would be remembered as a ‘stain’ on the democratic fabric of the country.
Gohar went on to criticize the irony of individuals who had faced defeat in the February 8 election being entrusted with governing Punjab. This, according to him, raises concerns about the integrity of the democratic process and the representation of the electorate’s will.
He emphasized that Maryam Nawaz’s ‘selection’ as chief minister had the potential to impede stability in the province, further exacerbating the existing concerns and fears among the people of Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz secured a significant majority to become the Chief Minister of Punjab earlier in the day, although the opposition had chosen to boycott the election. In her inaugural speech, Maryam Nawaz expressed her intention to serve as the chief minister for the entire province, transcending party lines and focusing on inclusive governance.
The criticism from PTI leader Barrister Gohar reflects the ongoing political tensions and divergent perspectives on the democratic processes in the region. Maryam Nawaz’s assumption of the chief minister’s role has sparked intense debate and opposition sentiments within the political landscape of Pakistan.
