ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways is in the final stages of formulating a comprehensive plan to acquire 230 passenger coaches and 820 High Capacity Wagons as part of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). The initiative aims to enhance train speed and ensure adherence to fixed schedules.
An official from the Ministry of Railways revealed that out of the total, approximately 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) passenger coaches have already been procured, with the remaining 184 set to be manufactured domestically. These coaches are designed to travel at a speed of 160 km/h.
The official highlighted Pakistan Railways’ commitment to completing rehabilitation and reconstruction work on railway tracks and improving the speed of locomotives to ensure timely passenger transportation.
Infrastructure upgrades, including track and signaling system improvements along the Karachi-to-Peshawar Main Line-I (ML-I) route, as well as track doubling from Lahore to Peshawar (462.20 km), are underway.
Under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the ML-I upgradation project aims to enhance the speed of the track to 160 km/h over its 1,726-kilometer length.
The rolling stock procured for this project will be capable of running at the targeted speed. Additionally, a dedicated fleet of 55 diesel-electric locomotives with 4000-4500 HP is available for freight operations to ensure maximum haulage at higher speeds.
The implementation of a Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) system on 48 stations of ML-I is enhancing signaling and interlocking capabilities for higher speed and improved train safety.
The official emphasized that Pakistan Railways, with its extensive network and around 63,000 employees, provides comprehensive welfare activities for its staff, including healthcare facilities, accommodation, staff benevolent funds, and various benefits and incentives.
The organization is committed to ongoing improvements and modernization to meet the evolving transportation needs of the country.
