LAHORE: PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has asserted that his party is prepared to take a seat in the opposition benches of the National Assembly if independent candidates can demonstrate their majority in the lower house of Parliament.
Addressing the media in Lahore, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the PML-N is ready to play its constitutional role if independent candidates fail to form a government. He highlighted the PML-N’s standing as the single largest party in the election, securing 75 seats in the National Assembly.
Reflecting on the 2018 elections, Shehbaz Sharif reminded reporters of the delayed results and allegations of rigging. Despite such challenges, he commended the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for its efforts in conducting the elections. While acknowledging the presence of independent candidates, Shehbaz Sharif noted that among political parties, the PML-N is the largest, and when independent candidates are considered, the numbers are even greater.
In response to questions, Shehbaz Sharif shared that Nawaz Sharif has advocated for PTI-backed independents to be given their constitutional right to form a government if they choose to do so. However, he added that if individuals willingly wish to join the PML-N, there should be no issue with that decision.
As the political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve post-election, parties engage in discussions on government formation and determine their roles in the National Assembly.
The PML-N’s willingness to sit in the opposition or fulfill its constitutional role underscores the party’s commitment to democratic processes and adherence to constitutional norms. The coming days will likely witness further developments as political parties navigate negotiations and alliances in the process of shaping the country’s new government.
