ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office spokesperson affirmed on Wednesday that Pakistan is unwaveringly committed to nurturing an inclusive democratic process, responding to the statement by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) concerning the upcoming general elections.
Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson, underscored Pakistan’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedoms, as enshrined in its laws and Constitution. This response comes in light of the OHCHR’s declaration on Tuesday, deploring acts of violence against political parties and candidates and urging authorities to safeguard fundamental freedoms critical for a meaningful democratic process.

With the general elections scheduled for February 8, the country has witnessed at least 24 reported incidents of violence against members of political parties in the lead-up to the vote. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, issued an appeal to authorities, calling for the assurance of a fully free and fair vote and a renewed commitment to the democratic process.
Addressing media queries, the FO spokesperson assured that comprehensive security plans have been finalized to conduct the elections in strict accordance with Pakistan’s electoral laws. Emphasizing the robustness of the judicial system, she pointed out that it provides for fair trials and due process. Domestic legal remedies are readily available in the event of any complaints arising during the electoral process, ensuring a mechanism for accountability.
As Pakistan approaches this significant electoral event, the commitment to democratic principles and adherence to legal frameworks remain paramount. The nation prepares for a transparent and fair election day, underscoring the importance of safeguarding democratic values and promoting a peaceful and participatory political process in the country.
