General Elections Unaffected by Pak-Iran Tensions, Says Election Commission

General Elections

ISLAMABAD: As tensions between Pakistan and Iran escalate, both the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the government have asserted that the current geopolitical situation will not impact the general elections scheduled for February 8 and their predetermined schedule.

Addressing concerns about the potential influence of border tensions on the polls, the ECP spokesperson affirmed the commission’s unwavering commitment to conducting elections as planned.

Emphasizing the ongoing preparations for the upcoming elections, the spokesperson dismissed any proposals or considerations regarding a review of the election date due to the Pak-Iran tension. The ECP remains focused on its mission and is fully prepared to conduct the elections on the stipulated date of February 8.

Information Minister Murtaza Solangi echoed this sentiment, asserting that the elections would proceed as scheduled and be held on time despite the prevailing tension between Pakistan and Iran. Solangi expressed optimism that the situation would de-escalate, dismissing attempts by certain elements, including some in the media, to use various excuses in an effort to delay the elections.

The minister assured that the government would provide the necessary security measures to ensure peaceful elections.

In response to queries about security requirements for the elections, Solangi affirmed the government’s commitment to furnishing the ECP with the requisite security measures. He reiterated that there would be no deviation from the scheduled general elections on February 8, providing assurance and clarity amid the evolving regional circumstances.
