Cipher Case
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari emphasized the gravity of the cipher case against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, deeming it a “major national security breach” that warrants a thorough investigation.
The cipher case revolves around an alleged failure by Imran Khan to return a diplomatic document, with the charge sheet claiming it was never handed back. Imran’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), contends that the document contained a U.S. threat to remove him from the prime ministerial position.
After the Supreme Court granted bail to Imran and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case, Bilawal expressed concern about the perceived leniency. He asserted that while he doesn’t advocate political retribution, the cipher case is a serious issue deserving proper scrutiny.
Drawing a parallel with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s indictment over mishandling classified documents, Bilawal highlighted the importance of securing Pakistan’s classified documents. He stressed the potential national security threat posed by leaked documents and called for a comprehensive investigation into the cipher case.
Bilawal, drawing on his experience as a former foreign minister, noted that every cipher typically has limited copies, including one for the foreign minister, one for the prime minister, and sometimes copies for security agencies. In this case, all copies were reportedly accounted for except the prime minister’s copy, which Imran Khan admitted misplacing.
Urge for a thorough inquiry and judicial examination echoed Bilawal’s stance, emphasizing the severity of the national security implications. Despite questions about a potential alliance with PTI, Bilawal affirmed the PPP’s independent stance for the upcoming February 8 general election, stating there is no alliance yet.
However, he suggested ample room for collaboration with political workers who prioritize democracy over vendettas, emphasizing the PPP’s commitment to participating fully in the elections amid pressing national issues.
