KARACHI: The establishment’s supremacy has overshadowed civilian structure, to the point that questions are being raised on its entire existence, said former Senate chairman Raza Rabbani.
Speaking at a book launch during the Adab Festival at Habitt City, Raza Rabbani noted that while the military establishment played a role in politics during the 80s and 90s, its involvement wasn’t as overt as it is today.
He suggested that the lack of transparency among politicians led to compromises, with political parties now looking toward the establishment for support.
Rabbani reflected on Benazir Bhutto’s struggle for democracy and principled politics during that era, lamenting the current state of Pakistani politics, which he believes lacks principles.
During the discussion, Rabbani emphasized that if Benazir Bhutto had not been assassinated, Pakistani politics would be in a better state today. He highlighted the changed approach Benazir Bhutto adopted during her last visit to Pakistan, focusing on politics without extremism and hatred, but based on principles.
Sherry Rehman, a senior PPP leader, praised Benazir Bhutto’s emotional generosity and resilience in the face of political challenges. Rehman recalled how Benazir Bhutto defied religious opposition to female leadership during an international conference in Cairo, altering the political dynamics in Pakistan from a gender perspective.
Zahid Hussain, the author of the book “Face To Face With Benazir Bhutto,” shared insights into Benazir Bhutto’s evolving political stance over time. He noted Benazir Bhutto’s willingness to acknowledge mistakes and listen to criticism during her leadership.
Hussain expressed concern about the current state of Pakistan, attributing it to a systematic collapse that cannot be fixed by a single individual. He called for collective responsibility in addressing the challenges facing the country.
