ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has been forwarded the Election Act Amendment Bill 2023 for approval.
Once the President gives his assent, the Bill will immediately come into force as an Act. It is important to note that the Elections Act, 2017 [The Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2023] was passed in parliament’s joint session on Wednesday.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister and PMLN senior leader Murtaza Javed Abbasi introduced the amendments. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar informed the joint sitting of parliament that the government had prepared a new draft of the amendment. In response to concerns raised by allies and opposition members. Including PPP Senator Raza Rabbani and PTI Senator Ali Zafar.
The law minister stated that, except for Section 230, there was unanimous agreement on all other amendments.
He also mentions that the amendments were being made in the Election Act with 100 percent agreement. And the caretaker government would be given limited authority to make major decisions and international agreements.
However, the amendments proposed by Senator Mushtaq Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) were rejected by the majority opinion of the joint sitting.
