Gilgit-Baltistan to hold local body elections after 18 years gap

In a significant development, local body elections have been announced in Gilgit-Baltistan after a hiatus of 18 years. The elections are set to take place in the first week of November. The announcement, made by the Gilgit-Baltistan chief court, marks a crucial step towards strengthening local governance in the region.

Local Body

The upcoming local government (LG) polling will be the first in almost two decades, as the elections were held in 2004. To facilitate the electoral process, authorities have initiated the demarcation of boundaries, which will be followed by the delimitation process.

To ensure smooth conduct, the Gilgit-Baltistan Local Government Act 2014 will be followed. It provides a framework for governance at the local level.

The citizens of Gilgit-Baltistan are eagerly waiting for the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and exercise their right to vote. This long-awaited local body election is a significant milestone for the region’s governance and representation. It signifies a positive step towards empowering local communities.
