PEMRA Banning statements and pictures of Imran Khan on electronic media, claims Babar Awan

ISLAMABAD: PTI leader Senator Babar Awan claimed that a ban has been imposed on showing statements and pictures of Imran Khan on TV channels in Pakistan.

Through his Twitter account, Babar Awan said that reports are surfacing about a ban on TV channels on showing statements, the name, and pictures of Imran Khan because of fear. These days, Senator Babar Awan is in London.

He, however, taunted that would Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz be able to make speeches without naming Imran Khan.

PEMRA for a boycott of those responsible for the May 9 riots

Meanwhile, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority urged the media to boycott those who are responsible for May 9 violence. PEMRA, nonetheless, did not mention the name of any PTI leader in its statement.

According to ARY TV, PEMRA issued regulations for all Television Channels saying that every citizen can exercise their freedom of expression except in extraordinary situations.

The statements which incite violence, hatred, and threat to peace of the society, are banned, PEMRA added.

Ensuring peace is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies and authorities hold the right to take necessary steps.

The electronic media regulatory body said that the May 9 riots put at stake the lives of people. The state buildings and military installations were also damaged.

According to PEMRA, one political party carried out anti-state activities and tried to spread hatred against the state and its institutions.

Notably, it is not the first time the PEMRA is going to impose a ban on showing statements of former prime minister Imran Khan.

The authority had already imposed a ban on TV channels for showing Imran Khan’s statements and pictures. However, the courts turned down the PEMRA’s ban declaring it unlawful.
