ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister, a senior PPP leader and Opposition leader in the Senate Yousuf Raza Gillani has announced his resignation as the opposition leader in the Senate.
“I have submitted my resignation to my party,” he said at a Senate session this afternoon.

Opposition leader in Senate has taken this decision after criticism against him and seven other opposition leaders for staying away from the Senate session which enabled the government to get approved SBP Amendment Bill from the House. On January 28, the upper-house of the Parliament approved of the most critical pieces of legislation – the State Bank of Pakistan Amendment Bill – while rejecting all recommendations made by the Opposition.
The SBP amendment Bill 2021 was approved with narrow but very well calculated 43-42 victory in the Senate. Approval of the SBP amendment bill from Senate and the National Assembly was an upfront condition of the IMF for the resumption of $6 billion suspended programme of Pakistan.
When the government tabled the bill in the Senate on Jan 28, Senators Yousuf Raza Gillani, Dilawar Khan and some other opposition’s senators deliberately missed the session, which resulted in debate in the country over tacit involvement of the govt-opposition for approval of mini-budget and SBP bill.
