Washington Activates National Guard Amid Concerns of Election-Related Violence

Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced on Friday that some National Guard members are being activated to remain on standby due to concerns about potential election-related violence in the 2024 presidential race. The decision follows information about possible threats and recent incidents targeting election infrastructure.

Washington, a state where Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is widely expected to lead over Republican candidate Donald Trump based on current polling, experienced incidents of arson earlier this week when ballot drop boxes in two locations were set ablaze. This attack damaged or destroyed hundreds of ballots in Vancouver, raising concerns about election security and prompting Inslee to increase preparedness measures.

According to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, Washington state offers early voting, with more than two million residents having already submitted their ballots. In his statement, Inslee emphasized the importance of ensuring security for the electoral process, particularly given the possibility of violent disruptions.

“Based on both specific and general concerns over potential violence or other illegal activities tied to the 2024 general election, I am committed to making sure we are ready to respond effectively,” Inslee wrote in a letter posted on his official website.

The governor’s proactive measures underscore heightened vigilance across the state, especially after the recent incendiary attack on a Vancouver ballot drop box, which damaged hundreds of ballots. The activated National Guard members will support local authorities if threats materialize, focusing on ensuring voter safety and preserving the integrity of the election.
