Punjab is set to establish 18 ‘safe cities’

Lahore : Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated a new project in Sheikhupura, making it the fourth ‘safe city’ in Punjab. During the event, she monitored the video wall and inspected the communication equipment aimed at enhancing citizen safety.

The CM announced a plan to implement safe city security measures across 18 cities in Punjab by next March. She was briefed on the advanced technology used in the project, including body cameras and smartphones.

The managing director of the Safe Cities Authority provided details about the initiative, and the chief minister interacted with police communication officers while overseeing roads and markets through the installed cameras. It was reported that 273 cameras would be set up at 52 key locations in Sheikhupura, with automatic e-challans for traffic violations. The Safe City Authority will also monitor the Air Quality Index, and a Facial Recognition System will help identify and track criminals.

Additionally, ‘pink buttons’ for emergency assistance have been installed at 10 locations, along with free WiFi available at 15 sites.

Following this, CM Maryam and local assembly members received updates on the law and order situation from the Sheikhupura district police officer, while the deputy commissioner shared progress on the ‘CM’s initiatives.’ In response to requests from assembly members, an expansion of the Sheikhupura-Sargodha road and overhead bridge project was agreed upon. The chief minister emphasized the need for effective measures to eliminate wall-chalking in the city and instructed local officials to keep their offices accessible to the public. She also encouraged assembly members to oversee development projects.

In a separate ceremony at Garments City Sheikhupura, CM Maryam was the chief guest for the graduation of the first batch of her women’s skills training project. She distributed certificates to women who completed training in garment making and sewing and offered financial assistance in the form of scholarships and job letters to needy women in Wagah.

“The goal of this training is to empower you to become self-sufficient,” she said, encouraging the women to embrace their new skills. She announced plans to establish garment training centers in every tehsil, asserting that skilled women would be viewed as strong contributors to society.

“No woman should need to seek help; instead, she should earn with dignity,” she stated, adding that the women of Punjab should set an example of progress and empowerment in education, health, employment, and sports.
