A report submitted to the provincial education secretary revealed that the Sindh government has halted salaries for over 1,000 teachers who were absent from duty or classified as AWOL (absent without official leave).
The Scrutiny Committee, formed to investigate complaints about ghost teachers in the province, compiled the report. Sources suggest that many of these teachers are currently overseas on extended leave.
In light of the findings, the secretary has directed all district education officers (DEOs) to suspend the salaries of the absent teachers immediately, with official notifications issued accordingly.
Previously, the Sindh education department dismissed eight ghost teachers who had been receiving salaries for two years while living abroad. Secretary Akbar Leghari stressed that Taluka education officers across the province are actively identifying ghost teachers and warned that strict actions will be taken against them.
