Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik appointed as new Director-General of ISI

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency. He will officially assume his responsibilities on September 30, succeeding Lt General Nadeem Anjum, who has held the position since 2021. Anjum was granted a one-year extension in 2023, marking a notable tenure in Pakistan’s intelligence leadership.

Prior to his new role, Lt Gen Malik has been serving as the Adjutant General at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, overseeing key administrative functions of the military. His extensive military experience includes commanding an infantry division in Balochistan and leading an infantry brigade during operations in Waziristan. These roles have placed him at the forefront of Pakistan’s internal security and counterterrorism efforts.

Lt Gen Malik’s educational background is equally distinguished. He is a graduate of two prestigious military institutions: the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom. In addition, he was awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour, an accolade given to top graduates of the Pakistan Military Academy, further underscoring his military competence.

As the new DG ISI, Malik will inherit critical responsibilities related to national security, intelligence gathering, and international strategic operations. His leadership is expected to continue shaping the agency’s role in addressing complex regional and global challenges.
