At least four of the gunshot victims are facing life-threatening injuries, according to a Birmingham police officer. The mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left several others injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when multiple shooters opened fire on a group of people in the Five Points South area. Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that police found two men and a woman “unresponsive” at the scene, and they were later pronounced dead. A fourth victim succumbed to injuries at a local hospital.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and Fitzgerald noted that the victims were targeted while out in the open. Additional gunshot victims were identified and transported to local hospitals.
“We have dozens of gunshot victims from this area. I’m told at least four of those gunshot victims are facing life-threatening injuries; the others have various injuries,” Fitzgerald said. A spokesperson for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital confirmed that at least 11 individuals were being treated for injuries related to the incident.
Police are investigating whether the attackers approached the victims directly or executed a drive-by shooting, and the number of shooters involved remains unclear. The investigation is being supported by multiple law enforcement agencies, and Birmingham police are working to obtain surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
“Rest assured, we are going to do everything we can to uncover, identify, and bring to justice those responsible for this act,” Fitzgerald stated.
This incident adds to the troubling tally of mass shootings in the U.S., with 403 recorded this year alone, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
