The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has condemned Israeli efforts to justify attacks on schools and shelters in Gaza. Since last month, the Israeli army has bombed around 21 schools sheltering displaced people, resulting in 267 Palestinian deaths and hundreds of injuries, according to the rights group.
On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City killed at least 22 people, including 13 children, as they targeted a school housing civilians, local authorities reported. The rights group described this incident as a potential war crime, emphasizing that such attacks violate principles of distinction, military necessity, and proportionality.
The organization criticized Israeli claims that they targeted militants during these attacks, stating that no evidence has been provided to support such assertions. It urged the international community to take action against what it termed genocide and other serious crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.
Israel’s offensive has systematically targeted civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and places of worship, raising concerns over potential war crimes under international law. Since a Hamas attack last October, nearly 41,400 people—mostly women and children—have been killed, and over 95,700 injured, according to local health authorities. The ongoing violence and blockade have displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, leading to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies.
