Trade unions have declared a nationwide shutdown for August 28

The Karachi Chamber of Commerce has voiced its strong support for the nationwide shutdown called by trade unions on August 28. This protest aims to address rising electricity bills, heavy taxes, and contentious contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

The shutdown has received broad backing from various trade organizations, with many pledging to continue their protest until their demands are met. Kashif Chaudhary, President of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions of Pakistan, highlighted the growing frustration among traders and industrialists, stating, “We can no longer shoulder the burden of these exorbitant electricity bills and oppressive taxes. Our livelihoods are at risk, and we will persist until these issues are resolved.”

In Karachi, the country’s commercial center, the strike has gained unanimous support from all major industrial areas. Representative bodies from Kati, Lati, Nikati, Fabati, Site, and the Karachi Chamber of Commerce have all endorsed the shutdown.

The Karachi Chamber of Commerce has been particularly vocal in supporting the strike, aligning with the concerns raised by traders throughout the city. Syed Raza Hussain, President of the Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industries (FBATI), underscored the seriousness of the situation, noting, “The escalating electricity costs have become a nationwide concern. We stand united against these unsustainable tariffs.”

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) has also endorsed the strike. FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh stated, “We fully support the traders in their struggle. Immediate government action is needed to address these pressing issues.”
