The joint parliamentary party comprising Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Sunni Ittehad Council has announced plans to stage a protest against the government’s decision to ban PTI and initiate legal action against its founding chairman under Article 6.
This decision was reached during a meeting held on Thursday, where several key actions and strategies were deliberated.
In a statement released after the meeting, the joint parliamentary party expressed vehement opposition to what they perceive as constitutional violations, including the alleged arbitrary arrests and disappearances of assembly members.
They also condemned the government’s move to ban PTI and called for similar action under Article 6 against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and others implicated in electoral irregularities.
The meeting participants also voiced concerns regarding the recent appointments of ad hoc judges in the Supreme Court, highlighting the importance of adhering to established norms in judicial proceedings.
During the discussions, Atif Khan of PTI proposed organizing a protest rally in Islamabad, mobilizing supporters from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to make a strong statement against the government’s actions. However, Zartaj Gul cautioned about proceeding without securing necessary permissions for such a gathering in the capital.
To address security concerns for PTI members, it was agreed that those facing threats should seek refuge at the KP House, ensuring their safety amidst the escalating tensions.
Barrister Gohar suggested pursuing the issue of ad hoc judges through the Judicial Commission, indicating a proactive approach to challenge the recent judicial appointments perceived as contentious.
Overall, the joint parliamentary party’s meeting underscored their resolve to contest what they view as unjust measures against PTI and to pursue legal and public mobilization strategies to protect their political interests and constitutional rights.
