The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has voiced strong objections to Nawaz Sharif’s unopposed election as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
A PTI spokesperson has urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan to take immediate notice of Sharif’s uncontested election. The spokesperson highlighted that the ECP should approach this issue with the same principles it applied to PTI’s intra-party elections. PTI accused Sharif of being elected by his “blind followers” without facing any opposition.
In their statement, PTI emphasized that Nawaz Sharif’s election poses a significant challenge to the Chief Justice and the Chief Election Commissioner, implying that the nation is closely monitoring the performance of these top judicial figures.
Earlier, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was elected unopposed as the PML-N president, a position he lost six years ago following a Supreme Court decision related to the Panama Papers case. The party’s five-member election commission, led by Rana Sanaullah and including members Iqbal Jhagra, Ishrat Ashraf, Jamal Shah Kakar, and Khealdas Kohistani, supervised the election process. Notably, no other candidates submitted nomination papers against Sharif.
PTI’s reaction underscores the political tensions surrounding Sharif’s return to the PML-N leadership and raises questions about the transparency and fairness of internal party elections in Pakistan. The call for judicial oversight indicates PTI’s ongoing concerns about electoral integrity and accountability at the highest levels of the country’s political and judicial systems.
