A Karachi court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for blasphemy against the Holy Quran. Additional District and Sessions Judge Wasiti Zabihah Khatak handed down the sentence to Zaeem Imran after finding him guilty of the offense.
Prosecutor Hina Naz explained that the case was filed by Imran’s wife, who accused him of blasphemy. The incident stemmed from Imran’s objection to his wife’s frequent use of her mobile phone, which led to him accusing her of misconduct.
The court ruled that Zaeem Imran violated Section 295-B by committing blasphemy and breaking the law. According to reports, Imran had demanded that his wife swear on the Quran to prove she was not in contact with another man. Despite her assurances, Imran, in a fit of rage, set the Quran on fire. Following this act, his wife filed a case against him and later announced her intention to seek a divorce.
The court noted that Imran’s disgraceful act offended societal sentiments, and he failed to substantiate his claims in his defense. Furthermore, he could not identify anyone else who might have committed the disrespect against the Holy Quran. In court, Imran accused his wife of being involved in an illicit relationship.
