Samsung Electronics expects its third-quarter operating profit to reach a record 107.4 trillion won, or about $80.1 billion, as demand for AI chips drives a major memory market boom.
The estimate represents a 782.5% increase from the same period last year. It also makes Samsung the first technology company to cross 100 trillion won in quarterly operating profit.
AI Demand Drives Samsung’s Profit Surge
Samsung expects third-quarter revenue to reach about 195 trillion won. That marks a 126.6% increase from a year earlier. Strong demand for memory chips has powered the sharp earnings growth. AI data centres require large amounts of conventional DRAM, NAND and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).
The global supply shortage has also pushed memory prices higher. Samsung expects tight supply conditions to continue as AI infrastructure investment remains strong.
Memory Business Leads Earnings Growth
Samsung’s memory division is expected to generate most of the quarterly profit increase. The company has also expanded HBM shipments as it works to close the gap with rival SK Hynix. However, rising memory prices have created pressure for Samsung’s smartphone and consumer electronics businesses. Higher component costs could weigh on those divisions.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s foundry business continues to face challenges from fixed costs and low factory utilisation. The company is working to improve its position in advanced contract chip manufacturing.
Investors Watch AI Boom Sustainability
Despite the record forecast, investors remain cautious about the longer-term outlook. Samsung shares have fallen from their June peak amid concerns about the sustainability of AI-driven growth. Analysts also expect memory price increases to moderate in coming quarters. Chinese competition and a possible slowdown in AI spending could create additional risks.
Samsung will release its detailed third-quarter results on October 29.
