Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has highlighted strong interest in the province’s Electric Bike Scheme for Students, with 1.14 million registrations.
According to figures shared by the chief minister, 1,149,058 students have registered for the initiative. The number includes 222,101 female students, highlighting participation from women.
The Punjab government launched the second phase in September and opened applications to students from eligible degree colleges and universities. The application deadline was set for October 4.
Electric Bikes to Be Distributed in November
Maryam Nawaz said distribution of electric bikes will begin in early November. The current phase covers 100,000 electric bikes.
Earlier government announcements indicated that students would not need to make a down payment. The government will also cover interest and insurance costs, while students will pay monthly instalments.
The latest financing arrangement puts the bike price at Rs199,000, with students paying Rs109,000 over 36 months. The monthly instalment is Rs3,028.
Students to Receive Safety Support
The scheme also includes support for participating students. The government will provide helmets and safety rods with the electric bikes.
Moreover, students can receive free driving training to help them use the bikes safely.
The Punjab Transport Department describes the programme as an effort to improve student mobility and support access to education. The government has also said the scheme can reduce commuting costs while encouraging cleaner transportation.
The November distribution will determine how quickly students receive their electric bikes.
