Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD is preparing to begin local vehicle production at its $150 million assembly plant in Gharo, Sindh.
The facility is currently in the final stages of equipment installation and commissioning. Once operations begin, the plant will assemble around 25,000 vehicles annually, marking a significant milestone for Pakistanโs growing electric vehicle industry.
The company expects the first locally assembled BYD vehicle to roll off the production line soon after the plant becomes operational.
Gharo Plant to Boost Local EV Manufacturing
The Gharo assembly plant represents one of Pakistanโs fastest-developed automotive manufacturing projects of its size.
Local production is expected to strengthen BYDโs presence in Pakistan while supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
The new facility will also help reduce dependence on imported fully assembled vehicles and improve supply for local customers.
Imported Vehicles to Meet Current Demand
Before local production begins, BYD Pakistan has increased its inventory to meet customer demand.
The company recently received its largest shipment to date, with more than 2,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) arriving through a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel.
These imported vehicles will support customer deliveries and dealership stock until the Gharo assembly plant starts production.
BYD Highlights Lower Running Costs
According to the company, BYDโs proprietary electric vehicle technology can reduce running costs by up to 75 percent compared with similar internal combustion engine vehicles.
The company believes lower operating expenses will encourage more consumers to switch to electric mobility.
Charging Network Expands Across Pakistan
To support the growing number of EV users, HUBCO Green Private Limited (HGL) has partnered with BYD Pakistan to expand charging infrastructure.
The partnership has established 19 public DC fast-charging stations along a 1,300-kilometre corridor connecting Karachi and Peshawar.
The expanding charging network aims to make long-distance electric vehicle travel more convenient and support wider EV adoption across Pakistan.
With local manufacturing nearing completion and charging infrastructure growing steadily, BYD is positioning itself as a key player in Pakistanโs evolving electric vehicle market.
