QUETTA: Security forces killed 12 armed attackers after a convoy linked to the Reko Diq copper and gold project came under attack in Balochistan’s Chagai district on Monday.
According to security officials, unidentified armed men attempted to intercept the convoy while it was travelling from the Reko Diq project site towards Quetta. The attackers opened heavy fire on the vehicles in the Nokacha area.
An official said around three dozen empty vehicles belonging to the Reko Diq project were travelling under security protection when the attack occurred.
Security personnel escorting the convoy immediately took positions and retaliated. The exchange of fire continued for more than two hours, leaving two security personnel injured.
Officials initially reported that 11 attackers had been killed during the clash. Security forces also recovered arms and ammunition, including heavy weapons, from the attackers.
Later, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti confirmed that the death toll among the attackers had risen to 12.
Officials from the Reko Diq project did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the attack.
Meanwhile, CM Bugti said intelligence-based operations against terrorists were continuing across Balochistan. He reiterated that the government would not negotiate with individuals who use violence against the state or target innocent citizens.
In a statement shared on a private post, Bugti said authorities would deal with terrorists and their facilitators according to the law. He also stressed that the state would not compromise on its authority or the protection of citizens and their property.
The chief minister further said security forces and law enforcement agencies were conducting coordinated operations to restore peace and stability across the province.
He warned that authorities would take action against terrorists and their facilitators and would prevent attempts to disrupt peace in Balochistan.
