Pakistani singer and rapper Shamoon Ismail has gained recognition from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Furthermore, Mamdani revealed that Ismail’s music remains part of his regular playlist during a recent interview.
Mamdani Highlights Shamoon Ismail’s Music
Mamdani shared his current music preferences while speaking with Rolling Stone. He said he has recently listened to Ugandan duo Radio & Weasel. Additionally, he praised Pakistani artist Shamoon Ismail during the interview.
“I’ve also been listening to a Pakistani rapper named Shamoon Ismail,” Mamdani said. He added that he has enjoyed Ismail’s music for several years. Moreover, Mamdani said he listens to Kacey Musgraves when seeking reflective moments.
The mention has attracted fresh attention to Shamoon Ismail among international audiences. Ismail blends Punjabi, Urdu, and English across his music catalogue. Consequently, his distinctive style has earned widespread popularity across digital streaming platforms. Songs including Tuntuna, Rung, and Confetti have collected millions of online streams.
Mamdani’s Musical Journey Continues
Before entering politics, Mamdani actively pursued a career in hip-hop music. He paused his music career after winning a New York State Assembly seat in 2020. He represents Queens, home to New York City’s largest Indian community.
However, Mamdani still lists “self-employed rapper” in his financial disclosures. He continues receiving small royalties from performances as Young Cardamom and Mr Cardamom.
Earlier, Mamdani performed alongside childhood friend Hussein Abdul Bar in Uganda during 2016. Later, he contributed music to Queen of Katwe, directed by his mother, Mira Nair. After meeting a hip-hop producer, he recorded several original songs.
Meanwhile, Mamdani recently appeared with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA in a campaign video. Their conversation referenced the famous Wu-Tang Financial comedy sketch, delighting hip-hop fans.
