President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China has been hailed as a significant step in strengthening Pakistan-China relations. Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong highlighted the diverse engagements of the Pakistani President, stressing their lasting importance for both nations.
The visit, held from September 12 to 21, included stops in Sichuan, Shanghai, and Xinjiang. It marked Zardari’s second trip to China this year, showing his commitment to fostering bilateral ties. According to Ambassador Jiang, the journey added a new chapter to the legendary Pakistan-China friendship and further advanced cooperation across multiple sectors.
Cultural Diplomacy and Global Civilization Initiative
President Zardari attended the Golden Panda International Cultural Forum in Chengdu, where he praised art as a universal language that bridges divides. His speech emphasized the Global Civilization Initiative, which encourages diversity, equality among cultures, and dialogue between civilizations.
This cultural engagement reflects growing exchanges between both countries. Films like BaTie Girl screened in both nations, Gandhara art reached China’s Palace Museum, and Pakistani mangoes gained popularity among Chinese audiences. Meanwhile, Chinese universities have expanded Urdu programs, and more Pakistani students are pursuing studies in China.
First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari’s visit to the giant pandas in Chengdu added a personal touch to the cultural exchange. These people-to-people initiatives highlight how both countries are embedding their all-weather friendship deep within society.
Technology and Innovation Cooperation
During his visit, President Zardari traveled on China’s Fuxing high-speed train, praising its engineering excellence. He also expressed enthusiasm for expanding cooperation under the “Corridor of Innovation.” Ambassador Jiang pointed out achievements in science and technology, such as joint agricultural projects, nuclear energy cooperation, astronaut training agreements, and satellite launches.
These advancements showcase steady progress in Pakistan-China technological ties. Ambassador Jiang emphasized that both nations are ready to expand innovation-driven projects to elevate the scale and quality of cooperation.
Economic and Energy Partnerships
President Zardari visited Shanghai Electric Group, where new cooperation documents were signed. The company’s investment in the Thar Engro Coal Power Project has boosted energy security in Pakistan while creating local jobs, particularly for women.
Financial collaboration is also deepening, with Chinese institutions like the Shanghai Stock Exchange investing in Pakistan’s financial sector. Since 1984, Shanghai and Karachi have enjoyed sister-city ties, which have steadily enhanced cooperation.
Ambassador Jiang highlighted that both countries will focus on industry, agriculture, and mining while exploring emerging sectors. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) remains central to this cooperation, offering opportunities for long-term economic growth.
Xinjiang Visit and Development Recognition
President Zardari’s tour of Xinjiang coincided with the region’s 70th anniversary celebrations. He visited Urumqi’s Urban Operations and Management Center, where he observed advanced smart city solutions. Expressing admiration for the region’s development, he encouraged more Pakistanis to explore Xinjiang and deepen ties.
Ambassador Jiang noted that Zardari’s comments reflected high recognition of Xinjiang’s economic achievements. His words highlighted Pakistan’s continued support for China’s regional development and stability.
Toward a Shared Future
Both countries are currently in critical phases of development, seeking to fulfill the aspirations of their people. Ambassador Jiang stated that China is ready to strengthen governance exchanges, share development wisdom, and build modernization together with Pakistan.
From cultural exchanges to high-tech collaborations, the visit showcased the depth of Pakistan-China relations. President Zardari’s second trip to China in 2025 reaffirmed the iron-clad friendship between the two nations and injected new momentum into their all-weather strategic partnership.
