YouTube has announced that it will begin automatically identifying and labeling AI-generated content on its platform, marking a significant shift in how the company handles the growing volume of synthetic media online.
The Google-owned video-sharing platform said on Wednesday that it will no longer rely solely on creators to disclose their use of artificial intelligence tools. Instead, YouTubeโs detection systems will identify substantial use of photorealistic AI and apply labels directly to videos when necessary.
โIf a creator doesnโt specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label,โ YouTube said in a statement.
Previously, YouTube introduced guidelines in 2024 requiring creators to disclose content generated or significantly altered using AI technologies. However, rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have made it increasingly difficult for viewers to distinguish between real and AI-generated material.
The change comes as advanced AI models, including Veo 3.1 and Seedance, have improved their ability to create highly realistic images and videos. As a result, concerns about misinformation and content authenticity have intensified across digital platforms.
YouTube stated that creators will have the opportunity to appeal if they believe their videos have been incorrectly labeled as AI-generated. The company also emphasized that the new labels will not affect its recommendation system or the visibility of videos on the platform.
Meanwhile, other online services have introduced similar measures. Music-streaming platform Spotify is among the companies that have recently adopted automatic AI-content labeling practices.
