The update applies only if parents choose to activate these controls. Teens will still be able to access Shorts freely unless restrictions are set. This approach places decision-making power firmly in the hands of families.

New Time Limits, Bedtime Reminders, and Break Alerts
Under the updated system, parents can customize Shorts usage based on daily routines. They can set a complete block when teens need to focus on studies or allow limited access during leisure hours. For example, parents may permit 30 to 60 minutes of Shorts during travel or downtime.
In addition to time limits, YouTube has expanded its reminder features. Parents can now enable bedtime alerts that notify teens when it is time to stop watching videos. “Take a break” notifications also encourage children to pause screen use and rest their eyes.
These features build on existing safeguards that already apply to accounts registered for users under 18. YouTube said it aims to support balanced usage rather than enforce blanket bans.
Another key update simplifies the creation of supervised accounts. Parents can now set up and manage child profiles more easily, even on shared family devices. This ensures better oversight and consistent enforcement of content and time restrictions.
