Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces have claimed they established control over the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait after capturing key positions in the coastal Dhubab area of Taiz province.
According to Al Jazeera, Yemeni army spokesman Brigadier General Majid al-Nuzaili announced the development through a series of posts on X.
Al-Nuzaili said government forces had captured an airport near the coastal town of Dhubab and tightened their grip on the surrounding area.
He further claimed that several Houthi fighters fled the battlefield by boat after government forces surrounded their positions.
The announcement came after government troops said they had captured the Dhubab district during what they described as a decisive military operation against the Houthis.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. It connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and provides a major route for international commercial shipping.
Control of the area could therefore have significant strategic implications for Yemen’s ongoing conflict and maritime security in the region.
Yemen has remained divided by a prolonged conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014. The internationally recognised government has continued efforts to regain territory held by the group.
The latest developments come amid intensified fighting along Yemen’s western coast and around areas close to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
