Yemeni government forces have reportedly captured Dhubab and several strategic positions near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as fighting with Houthi forces intensifies.
The Yemeni army said its forces conducted 1,122 military operations across several fronts, claiming that 1,747 Houthi members were killed or wounded.
Military spokesman Majed Abdullah al-Nazili said the operations targeted Houthi artillery and rocket-launcher positions, defensive fortifications, supply routes and military concentrations.
Government forces also targeted Houthi command structures and command-and-control centres, according to the military spokesman.
The operations covered Saada, Al-Jawf and Taiz provinces, as well as areas along Yemen’s western coastline. The army said its forces used aircraft, drones, artillery, missiles, rocket launchers and sniper units during the campaign.
Al-Nazili also claimed that the operations destroyed or disabled 364 vehicles and other military assets used for transportation and supplies.
The latest advance gives government forces positions close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi ordered security and military forces to intensify operations against the Houthis and recapture territory held by the group.
Yemen has remained divided by conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014. Fighting has continued despite international efforts to broker a lasting settlement.
