Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched a major military operation to retake territory controlled by the Houthi movement and restore state authority across the country.
President Rashad al-Alimi announced the campaign in a televised address on Sunday, ordering armed forces and security units to begin operations under an approved military plan.
Al-Alimi said the offensive would continue until government forces regain control of remaining areas held by the Houthis. He also placed state institutions on full alert as the campaign began.
The announcement followed significant Houthi advances near Taiz, where fighters reportedly captured strategic positions and moved closer to the main road connecting the city with Aden, the government’s base.
The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and large parts of northern Yemen since 2014. Last month, they also seized strategic territory along the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, an important international shipping route.
Saudi Arabia is backing Yemen’s internationally recognised government and is expected to provide air support, while Yemeni forces conduct ground operations.
The renewed fighting has further worsened Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. The World Food Programme has warned that increased violence has displaced tens of thousands of people and disrupted food supplies.
The escalation also threatens regional maritime security because of the strategic importance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
