Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched a major military operation aimed at retaking the capital Sanaa from the Houthi movement and restoring state institutions, officials said Monday.
Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced the offensive, describing it as “Operation Dawn of Yemen.” He said Yemeni armed forces and allied military formations would participate in the campaign with support from regional and international partners.
Al-Alimi said the operation seeks to restore government institutions, reclaim Sanaa and end Houthi control over areas seized by the group. He also expressed hope that the campaign would lead Yemen toward greater stability and peace.
Military spokesman Majed al-Nazili confirmed that government forces had begun a strategic offensive toward Sanaa. He said troops were using modern military capabilities as part of the operation. The announcement came as government forces launched simultaneous operations in several parts of Yemen, including the strategically important Bab al-Mandab region.
Earlier, the Yemeni army reported that its forces had captured the Dhubab district and several strategic positions near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Government troops also took control of Dhubab airport and cut the road connecting Dhubab with Mokha.
The pro-government Southern Giants Brigades separately announced what it called a decisive operation against Houthi forces in the Bab al-Mandab area.
The Houthis have controlled Sanaa since September 2014 and maintain control over large parts of northern and western Yemen. Meanwhile, the internationally recognised government and allied forces primarily hold territory in the south and east.
The latest offensive marks a significant escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict.
