Xiaomi has officially unveiled Sky Nomad, a new automotive sub-brand that signals the company’s next step in the electric vehicle market. Unlike its existing performance-oriented lineup, the new brand will focus on spacious family vehicles built for comfort and long-distance travel.
The announcement was made on July 8, 2026, as Xiaomi continues expanding its presence in the automotive industry. While its earlier electric cars targeted driving enthusiasts, Sky Nomad aims to attract families looking for practicality, efficiency and extended driving range.
Xiaomi Introduces a New Direction for Family Vehicles
The new brand has been registered in China under the name Xiaomi Pengcheng. At the same time, Xiaomi has started promoting Sky Nomad through large advertising displays across major Chinese cities. The company has also launched a dedicated page for the brand on the WeChat platform.
This latest move reflects Xiaomi’s broader strategy to diversify its vehicle portfolio. Instead of focusing solely on high-performance electric cars, the company now plans to serve buyers who prioritize space, convenience and everyday usability.
Sky Nomad Will Focus on Extended-Range Electric Vehicles
Rather than producing fully electric models, Sky Nomad will concentrate on extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). These vehicles combine an electric drivetrain with a gasoline-powered generator.
The generator does not power the wheels directly. Instead, it generates electricity once the battery charge becomes low. As a result, drivers can continue travelling without relying immediately on charging stations.
This technology also reduces range anxiety during long journeys. Moreover, it allows drivers to enjoy the smooth and quiet driving experience of an electric vehicle while benefiting from extended travel capability.
First Model Will Be the N90 Family SUV
Sky Nomad’s first vehicle will be the N90, a full-size SUV developed for families and long-distance driving.
The SUV measures 5.3 metres in length and features a 3.1-metre wheelbase, offering generous cabin space. Buyers will have the option of choosing either a five-seat or seven-seat configuration, depending on their needs.
The N90 uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline engine exclusively as a power generator. It does not drive the vehicle directly. Instead, it supplies electricity to the electric motors while also recharging the battery pack whenever necessary.
According to available details, the SUV will feature a battery larger than 70 kWh. It is expected to deliver up to 500 kilometres of all-electric driving before the generator begins supplying additional power.
Furthermore, Xiaomi expects the combined driving range to exceed 1,500 kilometres with both a full battery and a full fuel tank. This capability makes the N90 particularly suitable for regions where charging infrastructure remains limited.
Rugged Styling Meets Smart Technology
The N90 combines rugged styling with premium design elements. Its exterior features block-style headlights, a trapezoidal front air intake and additional air vents that improve aerodynamic performance.
Meanwhile, the high bonnet gives the SUV a bold appearance. Electrically powered side steps also make entering and exiting the vehicle more convenient for passengers.
In addition, Xiaomi has equipped the SUV with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. This technology supports advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving features, reinforcing the company’s focus on smart mobility.
Xiaomi Continues Expanding Its Automotive Business
The launch of Sky Nomad follows Xiaomi’s rapid growth in the automotive sector since entering the market in 2024.
The company delivered 32,759 vehicles in China during May 2026, demonstrating continued demand for its automotive products.
Xiaomi first entered the industry with the SU7 electric sedan. Later, it expanded the lineup by introducing the SU7 Ultra, the YU7 crossover, and the performance-focused YU7 GT.
Now, the introduction of Sky Nomad broadens Xiaomi’s strategy by targeting customers seeking practical family vehicles with advanced technology and extended driving capability.
Pricing Details Yet to Be Announced
Xiaomi has not yet revealed official pricing for the N90. Additional specifications are also expected closer to its market launch.
Nevertheless, the company’s latest announcement highlights its ambition to compete in another fast-growing segment of the electric vehicle market. With spacious interiors, intelligent features and extended-range technology, Sky Nomad is set to become an important addition to Xiaomi’s expanding automotive portfolio.
