Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger communication, mutual trust and controlled competition between China and the United States.
Xi made the remarks during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on September 24.
Xi Calls for Continued US-China Dialogue
Xi said Washington and Beijing should maintain candid, in-depth and continued dialogue.
He said stronger communication could help both sides understand each other better and build mutual trust.
Xi also called for closer contact between government departments handling foreign affairs, economic issues, financial cooperation, law enforcement and people-to-people exchanges.
He supported greater communication between the two countries’ legislative bodies as well.
China and US Should Avoid Conflict
Xi said China and the United States should coexist peacefully despite their differences.
He argued that both countries can benefit from cooperation but would lose through confrontation.
Xi said competition between the two powers does not need to disappear.
However, he stressed that competition should remain healthy and within limits.
He described it as a race to improve rather than a contest where one side must defeat the other.
Xi also called for regular communication between the two militaries.
He urged both sides to improve mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention.
He said the two countries must maintain a line against conflict and confrontation.
AI, Technology and Trade Also on Agenda
Trump said his discussions with Xi included security, technology and artificial intelligence.
He referred to advanced AI as “superintelligence” and said decisions in these areas could influence global stability for decades.
The two countries are competing heavily in artificial intelligence and advanced technology.
Both sides have also been negotiating trade and market access.
Trump said Washington and Beijing were working toward a more balanced trading relationship.
He specifically highlighted greater market access for American farmers and ranchers.
Xi Says Thucydides Trap Can Be Avoided
Xi also referred to the “Thucydides Trap,” a term describing the risk of conflict between an established power and a rising power.
He said the risk could be overcome through communication and peaceful coexistence.
The comments came as Washington and Beijing continue to compete over trade, technology, artificial intelligence and other strategic issues.
Xi’s White House visit marked his first trip to Washington in more than a decade and his second formal US state visit.
