BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed US President Donald Trump to Beijing on Thursday as both leaders opened a major summit focused on trade, regional tensions, and global economic stability.
During opening remarks at the Great Hall of the People, Xi praised recent trade discussions between both countries and described the negotiations as positive and balanced. He stated that cooperation between China and the United States benefits the global economy, while confrontation harms both nations.
Meanwhile, Trump described Xi as a โgreat leaderโ and expressed optimism about future relations between Washington and Beijing. Chinese authorities welcomed the US president with a formal state ceremony featuring military honours, national anthems, and children waving American and Chinese flags.
Trade Talks and Business Leaders Take Center Stage
The summit follows renewed efforts by both governments to preserve the trade truce reached last October. Under that agreement, Washington eased tariffs on Chinese goods, while Beijing reduced restrictions on rare earth exports.
Several American business leaders joined Trumpโs delegation, including Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, and Tim Cook.
Furthermore, both sides are expected to discuss investment cooperation, artificial intelligence, semiconductor exports, and expanded market access for American industries in China.
Analysts also noted shifting global power dynamics, with experts suggesting Washington increasingly recognizes Chinaโs growing international influence.
Iran Conflict and Taiwan Tensions Remain Key Issues
In addition to trade, discussions are expected to cover the Iran conflict and US arms sales to Taiwan. China recently repeated strong opposition to a proposed American weapons package for Taiwan.
Trump also hopes China will encourage Iran to negotiate with Washington regarding ongoing regional tensions. However, analysts believe Beijing remains unlikely to pressure Tehran aggressively because of their strategic partnership.
The summit will continue through Friday with additional meetings, cultural visits, and a formal state banquet hosted by Xi Jinping.
