In an unusual exchange just before a grand military parade in Beijing on Wednesday, Chinese President Xi and Russian President Putin were overheard discussing biotechnology, organ transplants, and even the possibility of human immortality.
The moment was captured by microphones of state broadcaster CCTV, as Xi walked in the company of Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un along a red carpet at Tiananmen Square. Putin walked to Xi’s right and Kim to his left in what observers described as a historic scene of symbolic unity among the three leaders.
Conversation on Longevity
As the three strolled together, Xi was heard remarking in Mandarin: “These days… 70 years old.” The comment appeared to reference average life expectancy.
Putin responded, through a Chinese translator, with a striking prediction:
“With the development of biotechnology, human organs can be continuously transplanted, people could get younger as they grow older, and may even become immortal.”
Xi replied that scientific forecasts suggest it could be possible for humans to live up to 150 years within this century.
Putin Confirms Exchange
Later in the day, Putin confirmed the conversation during a press briefing. “I think it was when we were going to the parade that the Chairman spoke about this,” he told reporters.
He expanded on the idea, saying modern science — from health improvement technologies to organ replacement surgeries — now allows humanity to hope that “active life will continue not as it does today.”
Symbolism of the Exchange
While the lighthearted conversation about immortality stood out, the optics of Xi, Putin, and Kim walking together at Tiananmen Square carried significant geopolitical weight. The parade marked the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, bringing together leaders from China, Russia, and North Korea for a rare public show of solidarity.
