As 2025 draws to a close, people across the globe, including in Pakistan, are preparing to welcome the New Year on Thursday, marking the arrival of 2026 with celebrations, traditions, and festivities.
Because of the worldโs many time zones, the New Year begins at different times across countries, with the earliest celebrations often drawing global attention. The first place to ring in 2026 was the Pacific island nation of Kiribati.
According to Pakistan Standard Time, the New Year began there at 3:00pm, while it struck midnight locally on the island. Owing to its geographic position, Kiribati is recognised as the first country to usher in the New Year each year.
New Zealand followed shortly after, welcoming 2026 at 4:00pm Pakistani time. In Auckland, large crowds gathered as spectacular fireworks illuminated the skyline, marking one of the most widely watched early celebrations. Soon after, major cities across Australia joined in, hosting large-scale fireworks displays, concerts, and public gatherings to celebrate the occasion.
Across Asia, including in countries such as Japan and South Korea, the New Year will be welcomed with a blend of modern festivities and traditional rituals. These include temple visits, prayers, and cultural events symbolising renewal, hope, and good fortune for the year ahead.
In Europe and the Middle East, preparations are complete for welcoming 2026, with major cities planning fireworks, concerts, and public events as midnight approaches. Meanwhile, Pakistanis are also preparing to mark the New Year with private gatherings, prayers, and celebrations.
The United States will be among the last regions to welcome 2026. In New York City, Times Square is fully prepared for its iconic New Yearโs Eve celebrations, including the installation and testing of the famous crystal ball. Millions are expected to attend the event in person, while billions around the world will watch the celebrations live through television and online platforms.
