ISLAMABAD: A long spell of heavy rain and snowfall is about to start in several regions in Pakistan. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain and snowfall in the next few days. The PMD announced major relief for drought-stricken areas, including Balochistan, as a strong westerly system approaches the province.
Officials said that powerful westerly winds will enter Balochistan between December 6 and 10. They added that the first significant and prolonged spell of rain will begin soon after the system arrives.
Moreover, the Met Office stated that rains are expected to continue throughout the month with short intervals. These rains are likely to persist due to continued moisture movement from the Arabian Sea. The PMD noted that the expected spell marks the first widespread wet period in recent months.
Improvement Expected in Drought-Hit Areas
The department said that the incoming system will bring improvement in several drought-affected districts. These districts include Zhob, Sherani, Musakhel, Barkhan, Kohlu, Sibi, Lasbela, Awaran, and Kech. The forecast also covers Gwadar, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Qilla Saifullah, Chagai, Nushki, Washuk, and Mastung. Officials said that many regions may receive heavy rain accompanied by thunder. Additionally, upper areas may experience snowfall during peak activity.
Furthermore, the Met Office emphasised that the spell is crucial for groundwater restoration. Several communities in Balochistan continue to face severe water shortages. Therefore, the predicted rainfall may support damaged agricultural cycles and dried reservoirs.
Experts Explain Weather Pattern
Weather experts said that north-western winds remain more active than usual this year. They added that continuous moisture from the Arabian Sea continues to fuel the system. According to them, these combined factors create conditions for an extended rainy spell across the province. They also believed that the pattern will contribute to a gradual rise in groundwater levels. Additionally, experts expect dam reservoirs to gain significant inflows because of the prolonged rainfall.
Authorities urged residents in vulnerable districts to remain cautious as heavy rainfall may trigger localised flooding. They also advised travellers to monitor updates due to expected snowfall in upper areas.
