China on Wednesday issued another statement, urging the United States and Iran to respect the existing ceasefire and avoid actions that could reignite conflict in the Middle East following a fresh round of military exchanges. Will China be able to influence the United States and Iran to uphold ceasefire by mere issuing weekly or whenever necessary statements to end this war?
Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China was closely monitoring developments and remained deeply concerned about the situation. She warned that renewed fighting would not serve the interests of any party and could further destabilize the region.
Mao urged both Washington and Tehran to remain committed to the ceasefire and continue efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. She stressed the importance of preserving opportunities for dialogue and maintaining the momentum of negotiations.
According to the Chinese official, all parties should honor their commitments under the truce and pursue dispute resolution through political and diplomatic channels. She added that a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire would help create conditions necessary for restoring peace and stability across the Middle East.
China’s appeal came after the United States reported military operations targeting Qeshm Island. US officials said the strikes were conducted in response to what they described as attempted Iranian attacks in the region.
Washington also stated that its forces, together with allied partners, intercepted several missiles and drones during the latest escalation. Meanwhile, regional security concerns intensified as Kuwait announced that its air defense systems had been activated in response to reported hostile missile and drone activity.
The developments have raised fears that tensions could spread beyond the immediate confrontation and affect the wider Gulf region. Consequently, concerns are growing over the durability of the ceasefire.
Beijing reiterated its support for diplomacy, emphasizing that negotiations remain the most effective way to reduce tensions and prevent a broader conflict. Chinese officials encouraged all sides to remain engaged in dialogue rather than resorting to military action.
The current ceasefire has been in place since April 8. However, recent strikes and missile interceptions have increased pressure on the fragile truce, prompting renewed international calls for restraint and diplomatic engagement.
